Favorite Drum Performances

My Top Ten Favorite Drum Performances - These are songs that are graced with intelligent, well-played percussion parts - NOT drum solos. Personally, I think drum solos are some of the most boring things that exist in popular music - almost as tedious as guitar solos! - which explains why you won't find Neil Peart or Rush listed anywhere on my page. I despise gratuitous, show-off playing, especially when it comes at the expense of the song. These ten songs just have great drummers playing great parts that contribute to great music. Listed here by song, artist, album - with drummer(s) in parentheses.

1. Running On Three - Brand X - Unorthodox Behavior (Phil Collins)

2. Beelzebub - Bruford - Feels Good To Me (Bill Bruford)

3. Cissy Strut - The Meters - Best of the Meters (Zigaboo Modeliste)

4. Mother Africa - Santana - Welcome (Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, Jose "Chepito" Areas, Armando Peraza)

5. Country House Shuffle - The Dixie Dregs - Night of the Living Dregs (Rod Morganstein)

6. The Truth Will Set You Free - The Flower Kings - Unfold the Future (Zoltan Csorsz, Hasse Bruinsson)

7. Last Train Home - Pat Metheny Group - Still Life (Talking) (Paul Wertico, Armando Marcal)

8. Shesmovedon - Porcupine Tree - Deadwing (Gavin Harrison)
